Experience
Kennedy Elementary School
This new school in St. Joseph, MN was built in 2008 as a model of energy efficiency and sustainability. Kennedy Elementary was the first school in the nation to receive LEED Silver certification under the new LEED for Schools program.
As part of Kennedy’s push for sustainability, Westwood Renewables helped design and install two kinds of renewable energy at the school. A wind turbine was installed at the entrance of the school on a 60’ monopole tower. The 2.4 kW wind turbine produces around 3,500-4,500 kWh per year.
A 5.6 kW PV array was installed along the south side of the building on a standing-seam metal roof. The 28 PV modules in this array produce around 6,720 kWh per year.
Westwood Renewables also facilitated the utility interconnection and state rebate processes, and educated the school’s faculty and staff on their new renewable energy systems.
The renewable energy installations not only help the school achieve LEED Silver, they also serve as great educational tools for the students to learn about energy and sustainability.
