Project Summaries

Saint John's Solar Farm

The PV system uses horizontal-axis tracking to maximize the efficiency of its 1,820 PV modules. The solar farm is currently the largest solar system in Minnesota, providing enough annual power for the equivalent of approximately 65 homes. Project funding, in part, is provided by customers of Xcel Energy through a grant from the Renewable Development Fund.

Kennedy Elementary School

This system combines solar power and wind power. It provides a learning opportunity for the students as well as power for the school. The 5.6 kW PV array consists of 28 modules mounted on the south face of the building. Wind power is provided by a 1.8 kW turbine in front of the school. Location: St. Joseph, MN

HourCar Charging Stations

The Neighborhood Energy Connection’s HourCar program features two plug-in hybrids at the Mississippi Market Co-op and the 46th Street Light-Rail Station. The NEC wanted these cars charged exclusively by solar. Installed systems at both locations: a 2.16 kW system at Mississippi Market, and a 1.95 kW system at 46th Street. Location: St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN

Willett Residence

Design and installation of a 2.72 kW tracking array on a home site. The system features 16 modules on a dual-axis tracker that follows the sun’s path across the sky both horizontally and vertically and greatly increases the annual energy production of the system. After just one year in service, production estimates were exceeded. Location: Stillwater, MN

Xcel Plaza Demonstration Project

Ongoing project developed for Xcel Energy’s headquarters in downtown Minneapolis, MN.  This project features wind and solar installations to showcase Xcel Energy’s renewable energy commitment.  The display in Xcel Plaza is rotated occasionally to illustrate the many different technologies available.  Our current objectives for the plaza include a vertical axis wind turbine and a dual-axis tracking PV array.
